UX Research + UI Redesign

Project Overview:

I have tried to address the issue of food wastage among individuals living alone (such as students and bachelors) who frequently rely on food delivery applications to order produce like fruits and vegetables.

Context:

Many individuals living alone often have busy schedules and limited cooking facilities, making them reliant on produce delivery applications, for their grocery needs. However, existing food delivery apps offer pre-packaged quantities of produce, which may not align with the consumption patterns of individuals living alone.

Pain points

Users often receive excess produce when ordering from delivery apps, leading to food wastage.

Lack of options to order the desired quantity of produce, the way they are available at local markets or fruit vendors.

Users may not have sufficient knowledge about the quantity (in grams) of produce they require.

How Might We ensure that users receive their preferred quantity of produce while minimizing food wastage on their end?

To-Be Scenario Mapping

Why introduce a new feature?

By introducing customizable portion sizes or "individual packs" for single-person households, this feature will allow users to order just the right amount of produce, leading to more mindful consumption. It will also provide a more personalized experience for users and help them save money.

Competitor Analysis

After a bit of competitive analysis of the services, I analysed their UI to understand design paradigms. The order of content on a page, navigational flow, various sections like contact information, footers, etc. I gathered screenshots of apps and then analyzed them one by one, which helped me make decisions further.

FINAL THOUGHTS / REFLECTION

The current system does not cater to my needs & the needs of people around me, in terms of portion control and ingredient management, resulting in the introduction of the new quantity + recipe-based ingredient ordering feature.
Upon further research I realized that this is an issue that goes much further just me and my peers. It has to do with all young individuals living away from home. It has to do with time, money and wastage of food. This was a project that helped me gain a much better understanding of UI design and conducting design research, understanding what the user needs and trying to enhance the experience of users in food delivery apps while addressing everyday issues like food wastage.
